Big Emotions considers the interior life of a child with the same gravity typically reserved for adults. The work resists the assumption that youth is simple or unburdened, instead acknowledging the complexity, awareness, and emotional depth present even at an early age.
The figure exists within a cultural moment in which the future of women’s autonomy feels unsettled. Rather than offering resolution, the portrait holds that uncertainty in suspension. Vulnerability and strength occupy the same space. Innocence is not naïveté, but a state of becoming—shaped by forces both visible and unseen.
Part of a broader series examining identity and social constraint, this piece reflects on what it means to grow into womanhood at a time when progress cannot be taken for granted.
