The Complexities of Life

How our Families Shape Our Future Selves

The Complexities of Life collection explores our sense of identity, our struggles to define self, and our place in the world. Inspired by contemporary like, Kehinde Wiley, pattern makers from the Arts & Crafts movement like William Morris & Co, to old masters like DaVinci and Caravaggio, I wrap subjects in intimate and familiar patterns and textiles of home, highlighting childhood, motherhood, and the complexities of our relationships with family and loved ones as we try to define our place in the world.

Through interviews and time spent with my subjects, I select patterns and botanical elements that have special significance to my subject. These patterns are meticulously hand painted as an act of love and a meditation on the individual. The subjects are entangled by the patterns with the elements rising from the background onto the subject conveying the way our relationships from home affect and shape us long after we leave.
